Can I Roll Over a Roth 401(k) to a Gold IRA?
Last reviewed by the Rollover Guidance editorial team: August 2026
A Roth 401(k) β also called a "designated Roth account" within a 401(k) plan β holds after-tax contributions that will grow tax-free and be distributed tax-free in retirement, as long as the distribution is qualified. When you leave an employer and want to move your Roth 401(k) into an IRA, the Roth character of the contributions is preserved: a Roth 401(k) can be rolled over only into a Roth IRA, which includes a self-directed Roth Gold IRA. Rolling a Roth 401(k) into a traditional Gold IRA would be a prohibited conversion without the requisite income inclusion, and is not a permissible transaction.
The Roth Gold IRA is the most tax-advantaged form of the Gold IRA concept. All contributions are made in after-tax dollars (or arrive via rollover of after-tax Roth funds). All growth within the account β whether from gold price appreciation, dividends on any other holdings, or reallocation gains β accumulates tax-free. All qualified distributions (taken after age 59Β½ from an account open for at least five years) are entirely tax-free, including in-kind distributions of physical gold coins and bars. There is no Required Minimum Distribution obligation for the original account owner during their lifetime.
For investors who believe gold will appreciate substantially over a long retirement horizon, and who can afford to pay tax on the contributions now (or who are rolling over an existing Roth 401(k)), the Roth Gold IRA offers the possibility of receiving substantial quantities of physical gold in retirement, completely free of federal income tax.
- Eligible? Yes β a Roth 401(k) can roll to a Roth Gold IRA (self-directed Roth IRA that holds physical gold).
- Tax on rollover: None, if executed as a direct rollover. The after-tax character of the contributions is preserved.
- Basis tracking: The amount of Roth basis rolled over from the Roth 401(k) must be tracked to determine the tax-free portion of any early (non-qualified) distributions.
- Five-year rule: The Roth Gold IRA's five-year holding period starts from the first contribution to any Roth IRA β but employer Roth 401(k) contributions' own five-year clocks carry over when rolled to a Roth IRA.
- Qualified distributions: Tax-free at age 59Β½+ if the Roth IRA has been open at least five years.
How the Roth 401(k)-to-Roth Gold IRA Rollover Works
The mechanical process mirrors the traditional 401(k)-to-traditional IRA rollover, with one important difference: the receiving account must be a Roth IRA (self-directed Roth Gold IRA), not a traditional IRA.
- Confirm Roth 401(k) balance: Your plan administrator should be able to tell you how much of your 401(k) is in the "designated Roth account" vs. any pre-tax traditional 401(k) balance. These are tracked separately by the plan.
- Open a self-directed Roth Gold IRA: Inform the new custodian that you are opening a Roth self-directed IRA. This is important β if the custodian opens a traditional IRA instead, the rollover character will not be preserved correctly.
- Request a direct rollover from the plan: Ask your 401(k) plan administrator to roll over the designated Roth account balance directly to the Roth Gold IRA custodian. The plan will issue a check made payable to "[Custodian] FBO [Your Name] Roth IRA."
- Custodian confirms Roth receipt: The custodian receives and classifies the funds as Roth IRA funds. Your basis (the after-tax contributions from the 401(k)) is tracked starting from this point.
- Direct the precious metals purchase: Direct the purchase of eligible gold, silver, platinum, or palladium β same eligible metals as a traditional Gold IRA.
Five-Year Holding Period: The Roth IRA's Key Condition
A Roth Gold IRA distribution is only "qualified" β and therefore completely tax-free β if two conditions are met: the account owner is at least 59Β½ years old, AND at least five years have passed since the first contribution to any Roth IRA (not just this specific Roth Gold IRA).
The five-year clock for the Roth IRA starts on January 1 of the first tax year for which any Roth IRA contribution was made. If you contributed to a Roth IRA (any Roth IRA) in 2022, your Roth IRA five-year clock started January 1, 2022, and is fully satisfied on January 1, 2027. A Roth Gold IRA opened in 2025 and funded with a rollover from a Roth 401(k) would already have its five-year requirement met if the investor has any existing Roth IRA that was opened before 2021.
For investors who have never had a Roth IRA before, the five-year clock starts with the first contribution to the new Roth Gold IRA. Distributions before the five-year period ends may be partially taxable (earnings portion only, since contributions come out first and are always tax-free).

What This Means in Dollar Terms
Roth Gold IRA: 20-Year Tax-Free Growth Scenario
Gold price appreciation assumption: 7%/year
Account value after 20 years: ~$773,000
β
Traditional Gold IRA (same initial balance, same growth):
Account value after 20 years: ~$773,000
Tax on qualified distribution at 22% ordinary income: $170,060
After-tax amount: ~$602,940
β
Roth Gold IRA after-tax advantage: $170,060
The Roth Gold IRA's tax-free qualified distribution advantage β $170,060 in this example β represents the value of the tax deferral and the rate differential between paying tax now (on contributions) vs. paying tax at distribution. For investors in high income tax brackets now who expect to be in similar or higher brackets in retirement, the Roth Gold IRA's tax-free growth is particularly valuable. Gold's potential for long-term appreciation amplifies this advantage: the higher the account balance at distribution, the larger the tax bill avoided.
