How We Compiled the Figures on This Page
We think you should know exactly where these numbers come from, and what we did not check.
Tax and IRS rules come from the statute. Every purity, storage, contribution, and distribution rule cited here is taken from IRC Β§ 408(m)(3), IRS Publication 590-A and 590-B, IRS Rev. Proc. 2024-61, and the SECURE 2.0 Act. Each section links its sources at the bottom.
State tax treatment comes from the state's own revenue authority, cross-checked against current-year filing guidance.
Company fees and minimums come from published fee schedules, cross-checked in July 2026 against independent reviews. These are the three companies we compared β not a survey of the whole market.
Reputation figures are third-party, taken from Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot listings. We do not score companies ourselves, because a score we invented would tell you nothing.
Promotions are labelled as promotions. Waived first-year fees and metals bonuses are advertised offers with qualifying conditions, not permanent account terms.
What we did not do: we have not audited these companies, held accounts with them, or independently verified their storage arrangements. Confirm every fee in writing before you sign anything.
Price context: the live gold spot price is shown at the top of this page. Spot moves every trading day, and every dealer adds a premium above spot β typically 2%β8% depending on whether you buy bars or coins. Confirm both the current spot price and your dealer's premium in writing before you buy.
Disclosure: RolloverGuidance.com earns a commission if you open an account through links on this page. This costs you nothing and does not change what we publish β the fee tables and IRS rules above are the same whether or not you use our links.

A Gold IRA is not a free alternative to a stock IRA. Four distinct cost layers apply β custodial, storage, dealer, and liquidation β and the total can easily exceed $500β$1,000 per year on a $50,000 account. Understanding every fee before you open the account prevents the most common regret among Gold IRA holders.
Understanding the complete fee landscape before committing to a Gold IRA is the single most important step a prospective investor can take. Unlike a stock brokerage IRA where costs are standardized and disclosed upfront, Gold IRA costs are distributed across four distinct vendors β custodian, depository, precious metals dealer, and delivery β each charging separately.

Account Setup Fee
$0β$300
Many custodians charge a one-time account opening fee ranging from $0 (waived for large accounts or promotional periods) to $300. Augusta Precious Metals and Goldco have both offered setup fee waivers for accounts above $50,000. This fee covers the administrative cost of establishing the LLC or trust structure for the SDIRA.
Published fee schedules from STRATA Trust, Equity Trust, and Goldco (2025).
Annual Custodian Fee
$75β$300/year
Self-directed IRA custodians charge an annual administration fee. Flat fees typically range from $100 to $300 per year. Some custodians use asset-based pricing β commonly 0.35% of account value per year β which is inexpensive for small accounts but expensive for large ones. A $500,000 Gold IRA at 0.35% pays $1,750/year in custodian fees. Flat-fee custodians (e.g., STRATA Trust: $100/year) are more cost-effective as the account grows.
STRATA Trust Company, Equity Trust Company, and GoldStar Trust published fee schedules (2025).
Storage Fee
$100β$400/year (or 0.10%β0.50% of AUM)
Gold held in an IRA must be stored at an IRS-approved depository (not at home or in a personal safe). Major depositories include Brink's Global Services, Delaware Depository (DDSC), International Depository Services (IDS), and CNT Depository. Flat storage fees range from $100β$200/year for small accounts. Larger accounts often default to asset-based pricing: 0.10%β0.25% of the gold's fair market value per year. Segregated storage (your gold stored separately, not commingled) costs 20%β50% more than non-segregated storage. A $250,000 Gold IRA at 0.15% pays $375/year in storage fees. Gold's higher density relative to silver means gold requires less physical space per dollar stored β storage is cheaper per ounce than silver on an absolute basis.
Brink's Global Services, DDSC, and IDS published storage fee schedules (2025); IRS Rev. Rul. 2010-26.
When you buy gold for your IRA, the precious metals dealer charges a premium above the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) benchmark spot price. Premiums vary by product: American Gold Eagles carry premiums of 4%β8% above spot; generic gold bars (1 oz PAMP Suisse or Credit Suisse) carry 2%β4% premiums. When you sell or take distributions in-kind, dealers pay 1%β4% below spot. The combined round-trip cost is the spread β typically 4%β12% of the gold's value, paid implicitly each time you buy and again when you sell. For a $100,000 Gold IRA purchase at a 5% dealer premium, you begin the account $5,000 below break-even.
APMEX, JM Bullion, and SD Bullion published price grids vs. LBMA AM Fix (spot) (2025); World Gold Council premium data.
Wire Transfer / Transaction Fees
$25β$50 per transaction
Each purchase or sale within the IRA involves a wire transfer between the custodian and the dealer or depository. Most custodians charge $25β$50 per wire. Frequent rebalancing β or purchasing metals in multiple tranches β multiplies this cost. Investors who make a single lump-sum purchase pay this fee once; those who dollar-cost-average over 12 months pay it 12 times.
Equity Trust Company and STRATA Trust published transaction fee schedules (2025).
Liquidation / In-Kind Distribution Fees
$0β$150 per event
When you take a distribution from a Gold IRA β either as cash (the custodian sells the metal and wires proceeds) or as in-kind (physical metal is shipped to you) β fees apply. Cash liquidations typically involve the dealer's sell-below-spot spread plus a $50β$100 custodian processing fee. In-kind distributions require the depository to ship physical gold to your specified address; shipping and insurance add $30β$150 per shipment.
STRATA Trust and GoldStar Trust fee schedules (2025); Kitco in-kind distribution guides.
Total Cost Example: A Real Gold IRA
For a $100,000 Gold IRA held at STRATA Trust with DDSC segregated storage: Setup $0 (waived) + Annual custodian $100 + Annual storage $150 (0.15%) + Dealer premium $4,000 (4% on initial purchase) + Transaction wire $50 = Year 1 total: $4,300. Annual recurring: $250/year. Over 20 years at a $100,000 static value: $4,300 + (19 Γ $250) = $9,050 in total fees. Gold must appreciate 9.05% from opening day just to break even.
Comparison to Gold ETFs
By contrast, a $100,000 investment in SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) β a gold ETF β charges an annual expense ratio of 0.40% ($400/year), with no setup fee, no storage fee, and no dealer spread beyond the ETF's bid-ask spread of $0.01β$0.05 per share. A GLD investor pays approximately $8,000 over 20 years in expense ratios β marginally less than a Gold IRA. However, GLD does not satisfy the IRS requirement for physical metal ownership, cannot be taken as an in-kind distribution, and does not provide the same asset-protection characteristics as an IRA holding tangible metal.
The total cost of a Gold IRA β including dealer spreads β is front-loaded in Year 1. Annual recurring fees of $200β$400/year are manageable, but the initial dealer premium (2%β8%) is the most significant cost and should be negotiated before any purchase is made.
How to Minimize Gold IRA Fees
Choose a flat-fee custodian β custodians with flat annual fees ($100β$150) are significantly cheaper than AUM-based custodians (0.35%) for accounts above $50,000.
Buy bars, not coins β Gold bars carry lower premiums above spot than Gold Eagles. On a $100,000 purchase, the difference between a 4% bar premium and an 8% coin premium is $4,000.
Negotiate dealer pricing β premiums are not fixed; many dealers negotiate for accounts above $25,000β$50,000. Get quotes from at least three dealers before executing any purchase.
Minimize transactions β each wire transfer costs $25β$50. Dollar-cost averaging with monthly purchases multiplies wire fees. Make fewer, larger purchases where possible.
Compare depository storage rates β DDSC, IDS, and CNT each have different flat vs. AUM-based pricing. For large accounts, AUM-based storage becomes expensive; negotiate flat-rate storage.
Use IRA aggregation for RMDs β satisfying RMDs from a liquid IRA (stock or bond) avoids forced gold liquidation at the dealer's sell-below-spot spread.

IRS Compliance: Gold IRA Rules That Apply in All Cases
Regardless of which fees & costs strategy you pursue, Gold IRA compliance requirements are fixed by IRC Section 408(m)(3):
Fineness: Gold held in an IRA must meet the IRS minimum fineness of 99.5%. Exception: American Gold Eagles are permitted at 91.67% under IRC Β§ 408(m)(3)(A)(i).
Storage: All IRA-owned gold must be stored at an IRS-approved depository β not at the account holder's home, not in a personal safe deposit box, and not with the dealer who sold it.
No Home Storage: The IRS has consistently held that physical possession of IRA assets by the account holder β or by any entity controlled by the account holder β constitutes a distribution. There is no IRS-approved 'home storage Gold IRA.'
Approved Products: Six gold coins are broadly accepted by major SDIRA custodians as IRA-eligible. All are sovereign-mint coins from governments with established numismatic markets. The American Gold Eagle is the only exception to the 99.5% fineness rule β all others are 24-karat (.9999).
For most accounts, total annual costs fall between $200 and $500: a flat custodian fee ($100β$200), depository storage ($100β$150 flat or 0.10%β0.35% AUM), and any transaction fees when buying or selling. One-time setup fees ($50β$100) and dealer premiums above spot (3%β8%) apply at purchase. On a $50,000 Gold IRA, total all-in annual costs typically run $300β$400 per year at a flat-fee custodian.
Are Gold IRA fees tax deductible?
IRA custodian and storage fees paid from outside the IRA (i.e., from personal funds) were historically deductible as a miscellaneous itemized deduction β but the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 suspended miscellaneous itemized deductions through 2025. Fees paid from inside the IRA reduce your account balance directly and are not deductible. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
What is the cheapest Gold IRA custodian by fees?
Custodians with flat-fee structures (rather than AUM-based fees) become the cheapest option for accounts above approximately $50,000. Equity Trust, New Direction Trust, and Strata Trust offer flat annual fees in the $100β$200 range. Birch Gold Group (all-in roughly $175β$225/year, flat rather than a percentage of assets) is competitive on total cost when factoring in storage. AUM-based custodians charging 0.35% become significantly more expensive as your account grows β on $200,000, that's $700/year versus $195 flat.
Do I pay fees when I close or liquidate my Gold IRA?
Most custodians charge a closing or termination fee of $50β$250 when you close the account or transfer to another custodian. Liquidating the metal through the custodian's dealer network may include a sell spread (dealer buys at 1%β4% below spot). In-kind distributions (taking physical metal rather than selling) avoid the sell spread but incur a shipping and insurance fee of $25β$75.
Are dealer premiums the largest Gold IRA cost?
Yes, for most Gold IRA investors the dealer premium at purchase is the single largest one-time cost. Buying $100,000 of gold at a 5% premium above spot means paying $5,000 extra on day one. By comparison, annual custodian and storage fees of $300/year take 16+ years to equal that $5,000. Minimizing the dealer premium β by choosing gold bars over coins, negotiating with multiple dealers, and buying in larger lots β has a greater long-term impact than choosing the cheapest custodian.
Is a Gold IRA a good investment?
A Gold IRA is appropriate for investors who want to diversify retirement savings with physical metal, hedge against dollar devaluation and inflation, and maintain the tax benefits of an IRA. Gold is not a growth investment like stocks β it does not pay dividends. Its primary role is as a store of value and a portfolio diversification tool. Most financial advisors suggest keeping precious metals to 5%β15% of a retirement portfolio.
Can I roll over my 401(k) into a Gold IRA?
Yes. Most 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, traditional IRAs, TSP accounts, and other qualified retirement plans can be rolled into a Gold IRA through a direct rollover (trustee-to-trustee transfer). Direct rollovers avoid mandatory 20% federal withholding and the 60-day rollover window risk. The rollover itself is not a taxable event β tax is deferred until distributions are taken.
Where is my Gold stored in a Gold IRA?
Physical gold held in an IRA must be stored at an IRS-approved depository β not at home or in a bank safe deposit box. The major IRS-approved depositories are: Delaware Depository (Wilmington, DE), Brink's Global Services, International Depository Services (IDS), CNT Depository (Bridgewater, MA), HSBC Bank USA, and JPMorgan Chase. Your SDIRA custodian handles the shipment and storage on your behalf. You receive account statements showing your metal's serial numbers and quantity.
What taxes do I pay when I take money out of a Gold IRA?
Traditional Gold IRA distributions are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate. Roth Gold IRA qualified distributions (age 59Β½+ and 5-year rule satisfied) are 100% tax-free. Early distributions before age 59Β½ from a traditional Gold IRA incur a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax, unless a specific exception applies (disability, medical expenses, death, etc.).
