How We Compiled the Figures on This Page
We think you should know exactly where these numbers come from, and what we did not check.
Tax and IRS rules come from the statute. Every purity, storage, contribution, and distribution rule cited here is taken from IRC Β§ 408(m)(3), IRS Publication 590-A and 590-B, IRS Rev. Proc. 2024-61, and the SECURE 2.0 Act. Each section links its sources at the bottom.
State tax treatment comes from the state's own revenue authority, cross-checked against current-year filing guidance.
Company fees and minimums come from published fee schedules, cross-checked in July 2026 against independent reviews. These are the three companies we compared β not a survey of the whole market.
Reputation figures are third-party, taken from Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot listings. We do not score companies ourselves, because a score we invented would tell you nothing.
Promotions are labelled as promotions. Waived first-year fees and metals bonuses are advertised offers with qualifying conditions, not permanent account terms.
What we did not do: we have not audited these companies, held accounts with them, or independently verified their storage arrangements. Confirm every fee in writing before you sign anything.
Price context: the live gold spot price is shown at the top of this page. Spot moves every trading day, and every dealer adds a premium above spot β typically 2%β8% depending on whether you buy bars or coins. Confirm both the current spot price and your dealer's premium in writing before you buy.
Disclosure: RolloverGuidance.com earns a commission if you open an account through links on this page. This costs you nothing and does not change what we publish β the fee tables and IRS rules above are the same whether or not you use our links.

Required minimum distributions from a Gold IRA follow the same IRS rules as any traditional IRA β but the mechanics of calculating and taking distributions differ significantly when the IRA holds physical gold rather than publicly traded securities. The IRS requires fair market value (FMV) to be established for each metal position annually, and custodians must use a qualifying valuation method.
RMD Age: Under the SECURE 2.0 Act (signed December 2022), the required beginning date (RBD) for RMDs from traditional IRAs is April 1 of the year following the year you turn 73 (for those born 1951β1959) or 75 (for those born 1960 and later). For traditional Gold IRAs, RMDs are mandatory. Roth Gold IRAs have no RMD requirements during the owner's lifetime.
How the IRS Values a Gold IRA for RMD Purposes
The IRS requires that IRA assets be valued at fair market value on December 31 of each year. For a Gold IRA, the custodian typically values the account by: (1) determining the number of ounces of each metal held in the depository; (2) multiplying by the LBMA afternoon benchmark spot price on December 31 of the valuation year. The December 31 LBMA PM Fix price β publicly available at lbma.org.uk β is the standard reference. For 2024, the December 31 LBMA Gold PM Fix was $2,625.10/oz (London Bullion Market Association AM/PM Fix Archive). Custodians report this valuation on IRS Form 5498, which must be filed by May 31 of the following year.
RMD Calculation: Gold IRA Step by Step
The RMD amount is calculated by dividing the December 31 prior-year account value by the applicable IRS Uniform Lifetime Table divisor (IRS Publication 590-B, Table III). For a 73-year-old in 2025: divisor = 26.5. If the Gold IRA's December 31, 2024 value was $500,000, the 2025 RMD = $500,000 Γ· 26.5 = $18,868. For an 80-year-old: divisor = 20.2; RMD from a $500,000 account = $24,752. If gold's price rises substantially between December 31 valuation and the actual distribution date, the RMD does not change β it remains anchored to the prior December 31 value.
The custodian directs the depository to sell a sufficient quantity of gold to cover the RMD amount plus taxes. The proceeds are wired to the IRA owner after withholding (unless the owner elects out of withholding on Form W-4R). This is the most common method. Tax is reported on Form 1099-R.
Advantages: No physical handling required. Exact amount can be matched to the RMD.
Considerations: Sell-below-spot dealer pricing applies. Transaction fees may apply. If gold prices are suppressed at the time of forced sale, the sale occurs at an inopportune time.
In-Kind Distribution
The custodian ships a quantity of physical gold to the IRA owner that equals the RMD value on the distribution date. For example, if the RMD is $18,868 and gold is at $2,650/oz, the owner receives 7.12 oz of gold bars or coins. The IRA owner receives Form 1099-R showing the FMV of the distributed metal as ordinary income. The recipient then owns physical gold personally β fully outside the IRA β which can be sold, held, or gifted.
Advantages: Avoids dealer sell-below-spot spread. Allows continued personal ownership of physical gold. Useful for investors who want to maintain precious metals exposure outside an IRA.
Considerations: Shipping and insurance costs ($30β$150 per shipment). Precise ounce quantities rarely match exact RMD amounts β either slightly over- or under-distributing. Capital gain tracking required for subsequent sale of the physically distributed gold.
Aggregation Across IRAs
If you have multiple traditional IRAs β including a Gold IRA and a stock/bond IRA β the total RMD amount is calculated by aggregating all traditional IRA balances. You may then satisfy the entire combined RMD by distributing from just one IRA. An IRA owner with a $500,000 Gold IRA and a $500,000 stock IRA (combined December 31 value: $1,000,000) has a combined 2025 RMD of $37,736 (at divisor 26.5). This entire $37,736 can be taken from the stock IRA, leaving the Gold IRA intact. The aggregation rule (IRC Β§ 408(a); IRS Publication 590-B) is the most common strategy for deferring forced liquidation of a Gold IRA.
Advantages: Preserves the Gold IRA without forced liquidation. Simplest approach for investors who have other liquid IRA assets.
Considerations: Requires the non-Gold IRA to have sufficient liquid assets to cover the combined RMD. May not be available if the Gold IRA is the only IRA.
RMD Failure Penalty
The penalty for failing to take the full RMD from a Gold IRA is 25% of the shortfall under SECURE 2.0 (reduced from 50% under prior law). The penalty is further reduced to 10% if corrected within two years. For a $5,000 RMD shortfall, the penalty is $1,250 (25%) or $500 (10% if corrected timely).
RMD Correction Window: Under SECURE 2.0, a missed RMD penalty is reduced from 25% to 10% if corrected within two years. The IRS has also established a self-correction mechanism (Revenue Procedure 2023-19) for eligible missed RMDs. If you discover a missed Gold IRA RMD, consult a tax professional immediately β the correction window may be available.
Gold-Specific RMD Planning
Gold's price volatility creates a specific RMD planning challenge: a sharp price increase between December 31 (valuation date) and the end of the following year (when the RMD must be taken) does not increase the RMD for that year β but it does increase next year's valuation and thus next year's RMD. Conversely, a price decline between valuation and distribution may result in the forced sale of more gold than anticipated to meet the RMD cash amount. This asymmetry is unique to physical-metal IRAs and absent from stock IRAs where the portfolio is highly liquid.
The Aggregation Rule: Your Most Powerful RMD Tool
If you hold multiple traditional IRAs β a Gold IRA and a stock or bond IRA β you may aggregate all IRA balances for RMD calculation and satisfy the total combined RMD from any one or more IRAs. By satisfying the entire combined RMD from a liquid stock/bond IRA, you avoid forced gold liquidation entirely while remaining fully compliant. This aggregation rule (IRC Β§ 408(a); IRS Publication 590-B) is the most effective single strategy for Gold IRA RMD management.

IRS Compliance: Gold IRA Rules That Apply in All Cases
Regardless of which rmd rules strategy you pursue, Gold IRA compliance requirements are fixed by IRC Section 408(m)(3):
Fineness: Gold held in an IRA must meet the IRS minimum fineness of 99.5%. Exception: American Gold Eagles are permitted at 91.67% under IRC Β§ 408(m)(3)(A)(i).
Storage: All IRA-owned gold must be stored at an IRS-approved depository β not at the account holder's home, not in a personal safe deposit box, and not with the dealer who sold it.
No Home Storage: The IRS has consistently held that physical possession of IRA assets by the account holder β or by any entity controlled by the account holder β constitutes a distribution. There is no IRS-approved 'home storage Gold IRA.'
Approved Products: Six gold coins are broadly accepted by major SDIRA custodians as IRA-eligible. All are sovereign-mint coins from governments with established numismatic markets. The American Gold Eagle is the only exception to the 99.5% fineness rule β all others are 24-karat (.9999).
Under SECURE 2.0, missing an RMD triggers a penalty of 25% of the missed amount (reduced from 50% before 2023). If you self-correct within two years of the missed RMD year, the penalty drops to 10%. The IRS also provides a self-correction mechanism under Revenue Procedure 2023-19. Act quickly β consult a tax professional and take the corrective distribution as soon as you discover the miss.
Do Roth Gold IRAs require RMDs?
No. Roth Gold IRAs (original Roth contributions and conversions) are not subject to required minimum distributions during the owner's lifetime, under SECURE 2.0 effective 2024. Inherited Roth IRAs (where the beneficiary is a non-spouse) are subject to the 10-year distribution rule. This RMD exemption makes Roth Gold IRAs particularly valuable for estate planning.
Can I satisfy my Gold IRA RMD with a distribution from a different IRA?
Yes β this is the IRS aggregation rule, and it is the most powerful RMD planning tool for Gold IRA holders. If you have multiple traditional IRAs (a Gold IRA plus a stock IRA), you calculate the RMD from each separately, but you can satisfy the total combined RMD from any one or more IRAs. By satisfying the entire combined RMD from a liquid stock or bond IRA, you avoid forced gold liquidation completely while remaining fully compliant.
How does the IRS value my Gold IRA for RMD calculation?
Your Gold IRA custodian values the account as of December 31 of the prior year using the published LBMA or NYMEX benchmark price. They report this fair market value on Form 5498. You divide this FMV by the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table divisor for your age to calculate your RMD. The December 31 value is fixed β it does not adjust for price changes between December 31 and when you take the distribution.
Can I take an in-kind Gold distribution to meet my RMD?
Yes. You can request an in-kind distribution of physical gold bars or coins from your IRA to satisfy your RMD. The FMV of the metal on the distribution date is treated as ordinary income (for traditional IRAs). The metal is physically shipped from the depository to you β you receive a 1099-R for the FMV. This is a taxable distribution but does not require selling the metal first.
Is a Gold IRA a good investment?
A Gold IRA is appropriate for investors who want to diversify retirement savings with physical metal, hedge against dollar devaluation and inflation, and maintain the tax benefits of an IRA. Gold is not a growth investment like stocks β it does not pay dividends. Its primary role is as a store of value and a portfolio diversification tool. Most financial advisors suggest keeping precious metals to 5%β15% of a retirement portfolio.
Can I roll over my 401(k) into a Gold IRA?
Yes. Most 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, traditional IRAs, TSP accounts, and other qualified retirement plans can be rolled into a Gold IRA through a direct rollover (trustee-to-trustee transfer). Direct rollovers avoid mandatory 20% federal withholding and the 60-day rollover window risk. The rollover itself is not a taxable event β tax is deferred until distributions are taken.
Where is my Gold stored in a Gold IRA?
Physical gold held in an IRA must be stored at an IRS-approved depository β not at home or in a bank safe deposit box. The major IRS-approved depositories are: Delaware Depository (Wilmington, DE), Brink's Global Services, International Depository Services (IDS), CNT Depository (Bridgewater, MA), HSBC Bank USA, and JPMorgan Chase. Your SDIRA custodian handles the shipment and storage on your behalf. You receive account statements showing your metal's serial numbers and quantity.
What taxes do I pay when I take money out of a Gold IRA?
Traditional Gold IRA distributions are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate. Roth Gold IRA qualified distributions (age 59Β½+ and 5-year rule satisfied) are 100% tax-free. Early distributions before age 59Β½ from a traditional Gold IRA incur a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax, unless a specific exception applies (disability, medical expenses, death, etc.).
