How We Compiled the Figures on This Page
We think you should know exactly where these numbers come from, and what we did not check.
Tax and IRS rules come from the statute. Every purity, storage, contribution, and distribution rule cited here is taken from IRC Β§ 408(m)(3), IRS Publication 590-A and 590-B, IRS Rev. Proc. 2024-61, and the SECURE 2.0 Act. Each section links its sources at the bottom.
State tax treatment comes from the state's own revenue authority, cross-checked against current-year filing guidance.
Company fees and minimums come from published fee schedules, cross-checked in July 2026 against independent reviews. These are the three companies we compared β not a survey of the whole market.
Reputation figures are third-party, taken from Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot listings. We do not score companies ourselves, because a score we invented would tell you nothing.
Promotions are labelled as promotions. Waived first-year fees and metals bonuses are advertised offers with qualifying conditions, not permanent account terms.
What we did not do: we have not audited these companies, held accounts with them, or independently verified their storage arrangements. Confirm every fee in writing before you sign anything.
Price context: the live palladium spot price is shown at the top of this page. Spot moves every trading day, and every dealer adds a premium above spot β typically 2%β8% depending on whether you buy bars or coins. Confirm both the current spot price and your dealer's premium in writing before you buy.
Disclosure: RolloverGuidance.com earns a commission if you open an account through links on this page. This costs you nothing and does not change what we publish β the fee tables and IRS rules above are the same whether or not you use our links.

Palladium IRA distributions β both qualified and early β generate the most operational complexity of any precious metals IRA distribution due to palladium's extremely thin secondary market. A $50,000 palladium distribution (approximately 50 oz at current prices) may represent a significant percentage of a dealer's daily palladium buying capacity.
Qualified Distributions (Age 59Β½+)
Distributions at age 59Β½ or older: ordinary income tax at the NYMEX-based FMV, no penalty. The custodian directs the depository to liquidate the required amount of palladium at the prevailing NYMEX spot price. Actual dealer execution may achieve prices 2%β7% below NYMEX depending on market depth.
Federal Withholding on Palladium IRA Distributions
Federal income tax withholding of 10% applies to all IRA distributions unless the account owner submits Form W-4R electing a different rate. State withholding requirements vary by state.
Early Distributions (Under Age 59Β½)
Distributions before age 59Β½: 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax on the FMV. Same IRC Β§ 72(t) exceptions apply. Palladium's volatility means the income reported on Form 1099-R may bear no resemblance to the original purchase cost β an investor who bought palladium at $2,500/oz in 2021 and distributes at $1,010/oz in 2025 reports income at $1,010/oz (not $2,500) but cannot claim any deduction for the decline in value within the IRA.
In-Kind Palladium Distributions: Receiving Physical Metal
In-kind palladium distributions are practical given palladium's high density β even 100 oz weighs only 3.4 lbs. Shipping is straightforward. However, selling physical palladium outside an IRA requires a palladium-active dealer β fewer dealers maintain active palladium bid programs than for gold or silver. The owner who receives physical palladium via in-kind distribution should pre-identify a dealer with a reliable palladium buyback program before executing the distribution.
In-kind distributions allow you to receive physical palladium bars or coins from your IRA directly β shipping from the depository to your address. This is distinct from a cash distribution where the metal is sold and you receive wire proceeds. Both are taxable events (for traditional IRAs) β the FMV of the metal on the distribution date is reported as ordinary income on Form 1099-R.
Roth Palladium IRA Distribution Rules
Roth Palladium IRA qualified distributions β made after age 59Β½ and after a 5-year holding period β are entirely income-tax-free at both the federal and state level. The 5-year clock starts January 1 of the year the first Roth IRA contribution was made, regardless of when the Palladium was purchased inside the Roth IRA. Non-qualified Roth distributions follow the ordering rules: contributions first (tax- and penalty-free), then conversions, then earnings.
Roth Palladium IRA distributions that are qualified (age 59Β½+ and 5-year rule satisfied) are 100% tax-free β no federal income tax, no state income tax in most states.
Birch Gold Group offers both cash and in-kind physical palladium distributions β you choose how you take retirement income.

IRS Compliance: Palladium IRA Rules That Apply in All Cases
Regardless of which distribution rules strategy you pursue, Palladium IRA compliance requirements are fixed by IRC Section 408(m)(3):
Fineness: Palladium held in an IRA must meet the IRS minimum fineness of 99.95%.
Storage: IRS-approved depository required β same framework as gold, silver, and platinum.
No Home Storage: Home storage arrangements are prohibited and constitute a taxable distribution.
Approved Products: Palladium's approved coin market is the smallest of the four metals β essentially two coins from two sovereign mints. The American Palladium Eagle has sporadic availability due to limited U.S. Mint production. The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf is more consistently accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions: Palladium IRA Distribution Rules
Can I take physical Palladium delivery from my IRA at retirement?
Yes. Once you reach age 59Β½, you can request an in-kind distribution of physical palladium from your IRA. The depository ships the bars or coins to your address. The FMV of the metal on the distribution date is reported as ordinary income on Form 1099-R and included in your taxable income for that year. You avoid the dealer spread (no need to sell at below-spot prices) β you simply receive the metal and report the income.
What is the 10% early withdrawal penalty on Palladium IRAs?
Distributions from a traditional Palladium IRA before age 59Β½ are subject to a 10% federal penalty plus ordinary income tax on the full distribution amount. If you are in the 22% bracket and take $30,000 early, you pay $9,600 in combined federal taxes (22% + 10%). The penalty applies to the FMV of the metal on the distribution date. Exceptions include disability, death, SEPP/72(t) payments, and specific SECURE 2.0 exceptions for emergencies and terminal illness.
How is an in-kind Palladium distribution taxed vs. a cash distribution?
Both are taxed identically: the FMV of the palladium on the distribution date is ordinary income for traditional IRA distributions (0% for qualified Roth distributions). The difference is what you receive: a cash distribution means the custodian liquidates the metal and wires you the proceeds; an in-kind distribution means the physical metal is shipped to you. After receiving physical metal via in-kind distribution, any future appreciation is taxed at long-term capital gains rates (including the 28% collectibles rate for gold held in a taxable account).
Do state income taxes apply to Palladium IRA distributions?
Most states tax traditional IRA distributions as ordinary income, matching federal treatment. However, several states fully or partially exempt IRA distributions: Illinois, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Iowa (under current rules) exempt retirement income including IRA distributions. Other states (TX, FL, NV, WY, WA, AK, SD) have no state income tax at all. Your state of residence on the distribution date determines state tax treatment β not the state where the IRA was opened.
What is the 5-year rule for Roth Palladium IRA distributions?
The Roth 5-year rule requires that the first Roth IRA contribution (to any Roth IRA) must have been made at least 5 years before a qualified distribution. The 5-year clock starts January 1 of the year of the first contribution β not the specific date. Example: a first Roth contribution made December 31, 2022 starts the clock on January 1, 2022, and the 5-year rule is satisfied January 1, 2027. You must also be age 59Β½ or older for the distribution to be tax-free.
Is a Palladium IRA a good investment?
A Palladium IRA is appropriate for investors who want to diversify retirement savings with physical metal, hedge against dollar devaluation and inflation, and maintain the tax benefits of an IRA. Palladium is not a growth investment like stocks β it does not pay dividends. Its primary role is as a store of value and a portfolio diversification tool. Most financial advisors suggest keeping precious metals to 5%β15% of a retirement portfolio.
Can I roll over my 401(k) into a Palladium IRA?
Yes. Most 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, traditional IRAs, TSP accounts, and other qualified retirement plans can be rolled into a Palladium IRA through a direct rollover (trustee-to-trustee transfer). Direct rollovers avoid mandatory 20% federal withholding and the 60-day rollover window risk. The rollover itself is not a taxable event β tax is deferred until distributions are taken.
Where is my Palladium stored in a Palladium IRA?
Physical palladium held in an IRA must be stored at an IRS-approved depository β not at home or in a bank safe deposit box. The major IRS-approved depositories are: Delaware Depository (Wilmington, DE), Brink's Global Services, International Depository Services (IDS), CNT Depository (Bridgewater, MA), HSBC Bank USA, and JPMorgan Chase. Your SDIRA custodian handles the shipment and storage on your behalf. You receive account statements showing your metal's serial numbers and quantity.
What taxes do I pay when I take money out of a Palladium IRA?
Traditional Palladium IRA distributions are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate. Roth Palladium IRA qualified distributions (age 59Β½+ and 5-year rule satisfied) are 100% tax-free. Early distributions before age 59Β½ from a traditional Palladium IRA incur a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax, unless a specific exception applies (disability, medical expenses, death, etc.).
